Debate over Katonah Lewisboro's ‘Indian’ mascot picks up at school board meetingPosted: Updated:
The debate over Katonah Lewisboro's use of an American Indian as its high school mascot continued Thursday at another school board meeting.
Trustee Terrence Cheng had expressed concern over John Jay High School's mascot at a board meeting in September.
"The mascot should be a unifying force," he said.
Chief Dwaine Perry of the Ramapough tribe spoke with News 12 on ceremonial land - about 40 miles from Katonah.
"They’re not honoring us by ignoring the true history of the country," said Perry. “And it’s painful to the younger people.”
According to the school district website, the discussion will continue at the next school board meeting on Nov. 7. In Katonah.
News 12 reached out to the Katonah Lewisboro school superintendent and is awaiting his response.
