Six dogs are out of the cold after police say they were rescued from freezing temperatures in Manorville.
Suffolk police say they were discovered in cages about a quarter-mile from County Road 111. Authorities say drinking water left for the dogs was frozen solid.
Police say two of the dogs were chained up while four others were locked in cages.
All of them were taken from the area around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday.
Frankie Floridia and Eddie Stepinski with Strong Island Animal Rescue say it was a heartbreaking discovery.
"They were barking, and they were shivering," says Stepinkski. "They were cold, and they wanted to get out."
Officials say the dogs range in age from 1 to 5 years old and were most likely used for hunting and tracking.
Also found at the site were around 20 rabbits in a cage in freezing weather. Authorities say it's not clear if the rabbits will be rescued because technically they are considered livestock.
The dogs were all taken to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter.
It's still not clear who put the animals there. Seventh Precinct is asking the public to call 631-854-8726 with information.
