The city of Yonkers is apparently allowing an employee to return to work once he recovers from his injuries after he was charged with drinking and driving and involved in a crash.
It's been two months since Akeem Jamal, the newly appointed Yonkers deputy communications director, was allegedly driving while intoxicated. Despite that, the city of Yonkers says it is taking him back.
The incident occurred on Sept. 15, just four months into his new role when authorities say he was caught driving with a blood alcohol concentration over .11%.
According to police, Jamal allegedly drove against traffic on Central Avenue in Yonkers for over a mile before he crashed head-on into another vehicle.
Jamal and the other driver were taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
Yonkers police tell News 12 the 4 ½-year city employee is facing six charges: reckless endangerment, assault, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and driving in the wrong lane of traffic.
A city spokesperson told News 12 Thursday despite this, they will be taking Jamal back after his recovery, highlighting that the accident did not occur on city time or in a city vehicle.
They said in part, "Thank you to the Yonkers Police Department for conducting a thorough investigation into this matter…We continue to send Akeem our thoughts as he recovers from his injuries and we look forward to his return to City Hall."
The day of his arraignment has not been released.
