Nassau County Police Marine Bureau officers jumped in to action to rescue a dog that fell into a creek in Merrick.
Police say Marine 11 responded to a call around 10:20 p.m. Thursday for a Jack Russell mix that was in the water at Cedar Swamp Creek in Merrick.
According to police, Officer Michael Kalab and two fellow Marine Bureau officers spotted the dog against a bulkhead trying to stay above water by clinging to a crossbeam. Marine Bureau officers were able to remove the dog from the water and bring it on the boat.
Holly Rosenberg says she was watching the dog, whose name is Eddie, for her daughter. She says Eddie escaped Tuesday from her home when she went to her door to check for mail.
"Around 6:30 p.m. I just peeked out my front door to see if I had mail delivered and he shot out of the house," says Rosenberg.
A search for Eddie yielded nothing until Thursday night when someone called 911.
Police say they don't know how long Eddie was in the water, which was only 30 degrees. They say Eddie was shivering and curled up in a ball.
Rosenberg is grateful to the officers.
"They're incredible," says Rosenberg. "I didn't even know if they would respond to a call like this."
Rosenberg says she has now blocked the entrances of her house so that Eddie can't run away again.
