The annual Sugar Plum Ball held by the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County wass a perfect escape for those dealing with the difficult disorder.

Years of dealing with cerebral palsy were left behind as girls from ages four to 12 enjoyed an elegant day of music and dancing with their families at the Chateau Briand in Carle Place.

Jimmie Mingo says his 4-year-old granddaughter, Ava Spaulding, has had a difficult life since she was born prematurely. But he and her uncle, Jaquan Mingo, say the ball gave her a chance to bond with kids that are like her.

"She gets to see everyone that's just like her around her and realize she is fine … it's regular, nothing is different," says Jaquan Mingo.
Robert McGuire, the director of the Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County, says the event is about supporting families.

"We have hope every day and we have miraculous outcomes every day because of the staff we have in the agency, the families that are involved in supporting their family member, and the children and adults that we serve," says McGuire.
