Rutgers Camden and Camden County College have announced a new partnership that hopes to provide an affordable option for those seeking an education in the state.
The streamlined program will give students dual enrollment in a number of degree programs.
"Students can enroll at Rutgers Camden or they can come here [to Camden County College] and be admitted as Rutgers Camden students on our campus,” says Camden County College President Dan Borden. “Pay our prices, graduate with an associate’s degree and then transition to a third-year program either at the Rutgers Camden campus or here at the Blackwood campus and finish their bachelor’s degree."
Officials say that the goal is to make it easier for some students to afford an education in the state. Students will be able to complete their associate degree and then their bachelor’s degree for under $30,000.
"I’m a single mom of three kids. I have another one on the way and I just think it's a great option. It's more affordable. I can stay close to home, I don't have to travel far distances to be stuck in rush-hour traffic,” says student Rachel O’Brien.
O’Brien says that she was looking at schools around the Philadelphia area, but that it was unaffordable when one combined tuition costs with travel expenses.
"Many, many students are very much concerned and I have to say many parents of students are very concerned, about the question of student debt and this really addresses that question in a significant way,” says Rutgers Camden Chancellor Phoebe Haddon.
Degrees available include criminal justice, psychology and political science. Applications for the program will be accepted this spring and the program will start in the fall.
