Attempted murder trial to begin for alleged gang member

Posted: Updated:

Opening statements are set to begin today in the  attempted murder trial of alleged Mount Vernon gang member.

Police say Jason Garcia, a high ranking member of the Bloods gang, ordered the shooting of two men outside a Mount Vernon bar in 2016. One victim was shot in the chest, the other in the head, but both survived.

Garcia and three others have already pleaded not guilty to first-degree attempted murder and second-degree conspiracy charges.

Garcia has also been charged with plotting to kill a witness in the trial. Prosecutors say Garcia made calls from jail orchestrating the plan.
Officials say today's trial is only for the attempted murder charge; the conspiracy charges will be addressed at a later date.
