A community is in mourning for a mother who police say was fatally shot in the head by her son Monday night.

Debrah White's loved ones gathered at a vigil to honor her memory Thursday night.

White was allegedly shot by her own son around 8 p.m. Monday. As the community mourns her loss, her son sits behind bars.

Her 43-year-old son was brought up on charges of murder in the second degree, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second-degree, and criminal possession of a firearm during his arraignment Thursday.

The criminal complaint says officers were informed of guns inside the apartment. News 12 is told a later search of the son's phone revealed a photo of his own mother after she was shot in the head.

Those who knew White say this is a horrific tragedy they never expected. They say there were no warning signs before the incident.

They are asking everyone who gathered in White's honor to keep an eye out for anyone who seems sad or lonely and to give them a helping hand.
