Police say three people, including a child, are dead after being fatally shot during a home invasion in the town of Newburgh Sunday morning.
It was about 8 a.m. on Sunday when police began receiving multiple calls about shots being fired at a home on Route 300.
Police responded, and discovered the bodies of a man and woman both in their 20s and a 9-year-old boy. A 3-year-old boy had also suffered serious gunshot wounds and was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center and is now fighting for his life. There was another child found in the home, who was uninjured.
Officials say a person of interest has been taken into custody for interviewing. "We believe this is a known person to the victims. This wasn't a random act," says Town of Newburgh Police Chief Bruce Campbell.
Police say they are conducting multiple search warrants across the area as part of the ongoing investigation. Town officials do not feel the public is at risk. "Really not to be concerned. I don't think this was a random incident, but again the investigation will lead us in the right direction," says Newburgh Town Supervisor Gil Piaquadio.
However, neighbors are shocked. Lou Urso says he was surprised to hear of a violent act happening in the neighborhood. “Down in the city, it wouldn't shock me but up here, yes, definitely, I would've never thought that,” he says.
