First-time politician to challenge Eliot Engel in Democratic primary

Posted: Updated:

A first-time politician has thrown his hat into the Democratic primary ring for Eliot Engel's seat in Congress.

Sammy Ravelo grew up in the Dominican Republic before moving to the Bronx at 16 years old with his mom.

He served four years in the Navy before joining the NYPD for 25 years.

Ravelo says his diverse background supports his platform of more educational funding, gun reform, and welcoming immigrants into the United States.

He says he wants to secure more school funding because he couldn't afford college and to fight for veterans benefits because he is one. He also wants to pass gun reforms and end the opioid epidemic because he saw violence on the streets as an officer.

Ravelo is also focused on making sure people have more affordable housing options.

He is one of three Democrats who have officially announced their candidacy against Engel so far.
