Congregation members are saying it's a miracle that the historic chapel in Calvary Presbyterian in Newburgh was not damaged in a two-alarm fire overnight.

Fire officials say flames broke out on South Street around midnight in the fellowship hall where the congregation would host community events. The hall suffered extensive damage.

However, the adjacent sanctuary was left unscathed. Thick walls and wooden doors are being credited for keep the flames from reaching the sanctuary.

The church dates back to the mid-1800s and has about 60 people in the congregation.

Fire officials say no one was in the building during the fire and no one was injured.

The church is now waiting for an adjuster to determine whether or not Sunday services can continue in the sanctuary.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
