The Dutchess County SPCA says it will now offer adoptions by appointment only due to coronavirus concerns.
News 12 is told the wellness clinic will not be open for routine visits and only animals in danger will be accepted. They’re currently caring for 100 animals, but at any moment, that number could grow.
The shelter anticipates an increase in animal capacity, as owners become too sick to care for them or can no longer afford them due to the negative impact on many jobs.
"If we're not prepared for the consequences of this virus on the animal population in the county, that in itself, would be even more of a tragedy,” says Executive Director of the Dutchess County SPCA Lynne Meloccaro.
The organization is seeking more volunteers in the event of caretakers becoming sick. Volunteers have been divided into groups to contain a potential spread and limit exposures.
Food and monetary donations are also being accepted due to many fundraisers being canceled.
"The DCSPCA is here to do all it can...the more the public helps, the more we can do," says Meloccaro.
If people can’t afford to provide food for their pets, a pantry has been established at Reach Out church in Hyde Park.
