Dozens of stores in Orange County are facing large fines after being cited for price gouging amid the coronavirus crisis.
Authorities say that reports of businesses listing popular disinfectant items like hand sanitizer and gloves for higher than usual prices are all too common.
State Sen. James Skoufis addressed the serious problem, saying in part, “Those businesses, retailers, suppliers who are taking advantage of the public health crisis right now ought to face significantly harsh penalties.”
Orange County officials say about a dozen retailers have been fined $2,000 each for increasing prices during the coronavirus crisis.

“I’m seeing 4 ounces of hand sanitizer for $12 bucks,” says one witness. “$15 for a small spray can of disinfectant.”
Skoufis is advocating for a new law that will make it easier for the attorney general to pinpoint retailers who price gouge and charge fines up to $25,000.
“This is a big deal. It’s a heavy hammer and it ought to prevent it from happening in the future,” he says.
If you suspect price gouging, report it to your county consumer affairs or contact the state attorney general’s office.
