Suffern mosque dispute carries over into Ramadan
Members of a Suffern mosque are pleading with its owner to keep the doors open longer for Ramadan, the holiest month of the year.
Members of the Masjid Darul Ehsan Mosque say they have shown up on the steps for prayer only to find the doors locked. During Ramadan, Muslims are required to pray at least five times a day. However, members claim the mosque closes at certain times, which cuts in on their prayer services. Members say they previously tried to attend a service that should have started at 8:30 p.m., but the mosque doors didn?t open until 9.
A lawsuit was filed against the mosque?s president last month after he closed the doors to a camp that was supposed to be held at the location. Even though the court ruled the doors be opened, the lawsuit stands because the members still can't get in at certain times.
Members are also supposed to be guided during prayer by someone who has memorized all 30 chapters of the Koran during Ramadan. They say the president has not provided that basic need, so they've relied on a 13-year-old boy who has memorized half of the Koran.
The president of the mosque said in a statement, ?There will be Ramadan services going on as normal. No comment on who will be officiating or running the services. The matter is in the court.?
