(AP) - Prosecutors say a college student declared himself "a patriot" after being arrested on charges of slashing a New York taxi driver's neck because of anti-Muslim bias.
A court document released today also says Michael Enright fumed to police that - in his words - "you allow them to blow up buildings in this country."
Enright pleaded not guilty today to attempted murder and assault as hate crimes. The 21-year-old is being held without bail in a psychiatric ward.
Authorities say a drunken Enright asked driver Ahmed Sharif about his faith before telling him to "consider this a checkpoint" and stabbing him Aug. 24.
Enright's lawyer has said the 21-year-old is struggling with alcoholism and post-traumatic stress disorder after a trip to Afghanistan.
