The Jets and Giants were playing Sunday, but the TVs in a popular sports bar and restaurant in Monmouth County weren't tuned to football.
Woody's Roadside Tavern in Farmingdale declined to air any NFL games, and instead showed just about every other sport. The tavern's management says it was honoring Veterans Day this weekend by not showing the games, amid the ongoing controversy over NFL players kneeling during the national anthem.
The idea came from a regular patron who is also a veteran. The man said his love of the NFL faded this year when players began kneeling during the anthem. He asked the owners of Woody's to sacrifice a busy NFL Sunday, and they ended up turning it into an event to benefit local veterans' charities.
A percentage of the food sales from Sunday will go to the Special Forces Association Chapter 19 and Green Beret Foundation.
