Taxes, gun shows and immigration highlight town hall
Taxes, immigration and the Westchester gun show were just a few of the topics discussed at a sometimes contentious town hall meeting with the Westchester County executive.
County Executive Rob Astorino held his third town hall meeting of the year Wednesday night in Port Chester and began with a message for immigrants, emphasizing that they are welcome and should not be afraid. The divisive issue prompted the crowd to yell "speak English" as the executive attempted to explain his answers in Spanish and English.
Other issues brought up include the gun show at the Westchester County Center, which Astorino says is well-attended and makes big bucks.
He also spoke of county initiatives like the Kensico Dam project and the county's airport, while highlighting affordable housing and the impact of the closure of the Indian Point nuclear power plant.
Astorino has been holding town hall meetings monthly since the beginning of the year. No date has been set for April's meeting.
Many people who spoke with News 12 say taxes were the top topic on their agenda. “What concerns me most is taxes; real estate taxes have always been high, but as we get older, we like for things to be reduced,” says Frank Simone, of Mohegan Lake.
