Teachers save programs at HV school district
Students in the Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery School District will be able to take art, music and other classes that were set to be eliminated due to budget cuts thanks to their teachers.
The teachers' association agreed to defer scheduled salary increases in order to reinstate a wide range of programs that were on the chopping block.
While union givebacks have helped save some programs, others will still be cut. Voters had previously rejected the district's $25-million spending plan, forcing the schools to adopt a contingency budget.
As part of the contingency program, one school in the district will be closed and some kindergarten and pre-K aides will be laid off.
