A Dutchess County school district is mourning the loss of one of their students after the teen fell from a moving car and died.
Officials say John Jay High School freshman Wilson Santiago was seen clinging to the side of a moving SUV on Clove Branch Road Tuesday before he fell to his death.
Authorities say two teens in the car, ages 16 and 17, fled after Santiago fell. Police made an effort to save Santiago, but it was too late.
The teens in the car, whose names are not being released because of their ages, were later found and charged with second-degree manslaughter. They are being held on bail and are due back in court next week.
Santiago was remembered as the new kid in school that everyone liked.
"Everyone took a liking to him immediately,” says Jose Carrion, the Wappingers school superintendent. “He made lots of friends and his classmates were fond of him, his teachers were fond of him."
It was not immediately clear why Santiago was clinging to the side of the SUV.
