Thyroid cancer screening held in Suffern
Dozens of people attended a free thyroid cancer screening at Rockland Community College in Suffern Wednesday.
The screening was organized by Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee and Project Chernobyl, a nonprofit group specializing in diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer, to raise awareness of the illness in Rockland County.
According to the state Department of Health, Rockland has the highest rates of thyroid cancer in New York.
Scientist Joseph Mangano says Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan may be to blame for the high rates of thyroid cancer. Mangano's theory is based on a four-year study he conducted using data from the Centers for Disease Control.
