Trial begins for ex-cop accused in fatal beating
Jury selection started Monday in the trial of a former Mount Kisco police officer who's accused of fatally beating an illegal immigrant.
About 120 prospective jurors filed into a White Plains courtroom to answer questions. Of those potential jurors, 12 will be picked to hear the case.
Former Officer George Bubaris walked into the courthouse with his pregnant wife and family at his side. He's charged with manslaughter in the April 2007 beating death of Rene Perez. Perez, who was allegedly drunk, was found beaten and dumped on a Bedford road.
Fernando Mateo, of Hispanics Across America, and community members held a news conference in support of Perez's relatives before proceeding.
Jury selection is expected to take two to three days.
