Trial begins for Haverstraw couple accused in child's death
The trial of two Haverstraw parents accused in their 5-month-old's death began today in a New City courtroom.
The prosecutor said the infant, Michelle Aviles, was battered and bruised and her skull partially crushed when the couple, Michael Aviles and Lisette Cappellan, brought her to the hospital and claimed they didn't know what happened.
The prosecutor said he plans to prove Aviles and Cappellan are both responsible for their daughter's death, but lawyers for the couple said the district attorney doesn't have evidence that would prove who beat the child.
It's unclear if either of the defendants will take the stand. Lawyers said the trial could last at least two weeks. Mom arrested in connection with child's beating death Wake held for slain 5-month-old in Haverstraw Dad accused in connection with 5-month-old daughter's death
