Trial set for ex-Mt. Kisco cop accused in fatal beating
A judge set a trial date Thursday for a former Mount Kisco police officer who's accused in an immigrant's death. Residents say whatever the outcome, it will take a long time for the community to heal.
George Bubaris, who quit the police force earlier this year rather than face disciplinary charges, faces criminal charges in the April 2007 beating death of Rene Perez. Bubaris allegedly delivered the blow to Perez that ended his life on the side of a road.
Some residents are already passing judgment on Bubaris. "I do think he's guilty," says Tammy Bryson. "There are way too many things hidden."
Whether Bubaris is found guilty or innocent, James Overby believes there's a bigger issue at stake. "It's a blemish on the Town of Mount Kisco," Overby says. "He's innocent until he's proven guilty, but it's gonna hurt the community. It definitely will hurt [police] because now who do you put your trust in."
One last pretrial hearing will occur before the trial starts May 19 with jury selection.
