The Tunnel to Towers Foundation says it is doing everything in its power to ensure the "Tribute in Light" event will happen again this Sept. 11.

The announcement comes after the 9/11 Memorial and Museum said it was canceling the annual event because of health risks it poses during the pandemic to the large crew needed to create the towers of light.

The twin beams of light honor the lives lost during the terror attacks at the Twin Towers.

The decision to cancel the event drew backlash from members of the FDNY and residents who blamed Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo for not reversing the decision.

Some praised the Tunnel to Towers Foundation for stepping in.
"There is no social gathering," Angela Cipriano wrote on Facebook. "Lights are viewed from a distance. Disgraceful."

The Tunnel to Towers told WCBS 880 that the foundation would set up its own light memorial near the World Trade Center location, saying it already secured the lights.

The foundation also told News 12 that families will get the chance to read the names of loved ones who they lost during a ceremony on Sept. 11.

The 9/11 Memorial and Museum had originally said only a recording would be played because of coronavirus concerns.
