Lawmakers are joining veterans to demand answers after a Turn To Tara investigation revealed a veteran’s corpse was neglected for months at a local VA.
The body of Korean War veteran Santos Colon, of Newburgh, was forgotten about and left to decompose for nearly four months before starting to liquefy at the VA in Montrose.
As News 12 reported last month, the commissioner of the Westchester County Veterans Agency sent a letter on behalf of hundreds of veterans to Washington, D.C., demanding an explanation.
News 12 has learned that Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Nita Lowey are reportedly requesting a full-blown investigation into the incident. County Legislator MaryJane Shimsky says she also wants answers now.

“Hopefully, we will be able to prevent things like this from happening,” says Shimsky.
County officials say they were recently told a probe at the VA into the matter led to new protocols, but the VA refused to confirm if any changes have been made.
