U.S. Coast Guard crew takes to the Hudson River to help break the ice
WEST POINT - A U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker boat has been working along the Hudson River to help clear the ice.
News 12 was onboard today as the Coast Guard crew left West Point. At some points the boat was tearing through up to a foot of ice on the frigid waters.
The icebreaker travels as far north as Albany as part of an operation to keep the river passable for commerce, including oil shipments. The effort also helps with the security and safety issues.
Coast Guard officials say the work along the Hudson is crucial since most of the area's heating oil is delivered by barge.
