An umpire suffered an apparent heart attack during a Warwick Valley High School scrimmage Wednesday and died.
Steve Bocskocsky, 60, collapsed on the varsity field, just steps away from an Automated External Defibrillator -- a device which delivers a potentially life-saving shock to the heart.
Sophomore George Layng sprang into action and quickly brought the AED, and assistant coach John Garcia immediately put it to use.
"It seemed like [in] no time we had the AED in my hand," Garcia recalls. "I then opened the packs up, I put it on the umpire, and we shocked him very, very quickly."
However, it was too late. John Russo, director of physical education, health and safety at the school, says Garcia did everything possible to save the umpire's life.
Warwick has more than 30 AEDs in its district, including several portable ones. Many of the devices were donated by local doctors.
