RYE BROOK - After weeks of closed-door negotiations, a tentative agreement was reached early Saturday morning between the owners of Indian Point nuclear power plant and their 400 union workers.

The union's contract was set to expire at midnight on Friday, but that deadline was pushed to 1 a.m. amid progress made during the talks. Union members and company officials worked well into the night to hammer out details of the deal at the Hilton Westchester hotel in Rye Brook, 20 miles from the plant's location.

Representatives for Local 1-2 say key issues included benefits, wages and health care.

A vice president at Indian Point, owned by Entergy, says the settlement will help employees to "focus on their mission to safely provide affordable and reliable power to millions."

Union members will still have to approve the deal to make it official. A vote is expected to come in the next few weeks.
