Unusual item sparks bomb scare at Stewart airport
A passenger trying to catch a flight at Stewart International Airport Tuesday night set off security alarms, sparked panic and caused delays because of an object in his carry-on luggage.
Security scanners at the airport spotted a suspicious-looking item going through the X-ray machine, with components resembling a bomb. Officials say the suspicious item was an inflatable life vest, stolen from an airplane. Police say Justin Braun, an Ohio State University student, took the vest off the plane he took into Stewart last week. When Braun tried to catch his SkyBus flight back to Columbus, he was stopped.
The passenger terminal was evacuated and resumed normal operation at approximately 11:30 p.m.
Braun was charged with criminal nuisance and possession of stolen property. He missed his flight and was taken to Orange County Jail.
