Valley View nursing home to close in 6 months
The Orange County Legislature fell one vote short today of overriding County Executive Ed Diana's (R-Orange) veto to save the Valley View nursing home in Goshen. Before the vote, workers and patients' families gathered outside the Orange County Emergency Services Center, expressing their concerns about the nursing home's possible closure. When the county executive presented his 2012 budget proposal, it included a plan to fund the nursing home for only six months, sparking outrage among workers, patients and their families. The Legislature then added $9 million to the spending plan to keep the facility open for a full year while lawmakers figured out its future. However, Diana vetoed the Legislature's changes, calling them unsound and unbalanced.
