Warwick P.D. hopes to save cash by using cameras
In an effort to save money and prevent vandalism, the Warwick Police Department will install surveillance security cameras instead of hiring more police officers.
Officials say the three security cameras they are installing in the village and town are primarily meant to be a vandalism deterrent. While most residents welcome the new measure, others fear that the cameras will invade their privacy. Town officials are assuring them that the cameras are for their safety.
"The police are not going to be intruding on people's privacy, but we'll be using it as a tool to avoid senseless vandalism," says Warwick Town Supervisor Michael Sweeton.
Officials say each camera costs $4,000. The price is 10 times less than the average salary of the town's police officers.
Thus far, one camera has been installed at a local park. Officials say that they have seen a drastic decline in vandalism in that area.
