Local leaders gathered in Rockland County Monday to remember the 11 lives lost in a Pittsburgh synagogue.

Hundreds visited the Jewish Community Campus in West Nyack, with some saying those killed at Tree of Life synagogue are a reminder that something like that could happen in the Hudson Valley.

Security was heightened at the campus gym, where the vigil was held.

Some in attendance say the shooting was a realization of growing anti-Semitism in the country. According to the Anti-Defamation League, anti-Semitic incidents in the U.S. rose 57 percent in 2017.

Local leaders condemned the act and called for stricter gun laws. The shooter was armed with an AR-15.

"We need to do more so it's not just security, it's also got to be combined with appropriate gun control legislation," says state Sen. David Carlucci.

Vigils were also held in Goshen and Purchase Monday night.
