Westchester County exec disputes grand jury's scathing report on DSS
Westchester County Executive Andy Spano fired back at a grand jury report that blasted the Department of Social Services (DSS).
Spano says the report only focuses on two sensational cases and therefore lacks credibility. The jury, empaneled by Westchester District Attorney Jeanine Pirro, criticized DSS for mishandling a neglect case against two Yonkers parents before their two children were scalded to death. It also found fault with DSS in a case where a child suffered a fractured skull after being thrown against a wall by a drug-addicted father.
Spano says the grand jury report was politically motivated and accuses Pirro of trying to embarrass him. Spano says the agency is one of the best in the state of New York. Pirro countered by saying the report is about the fate of children and insisted the DSS system is broken.
