Westchester Medical Center announces layoffs
Westchester Medical Center officials announced Friday that they will eliminate 400 jobs by the end of the month due to budget constraints.
Some of the positions on the chopping block are already vacant, and more than 100 people have taken voluntary resignation packages. However, 125 workers will be laid off, including social workers, professional staff and technical support personnel.
The Taylor Care Center nursing home, located on the Valhalla campus, is also set to shut down. The 100-bed facility will close its doors in April, leading to the loss of 185 jobs.
Hospital administrators say they have had three consecutive years of profitable operations, but due to decreases in Medicaid funds and state aid, they are forced to trim $40 million off their $700 million budget.
Alyce Bonamici, the mother of a patient at Westchester Medical Center, says she is concerned about how the layoffs will affect the quality of care at the hospital.
"They are not going to get the care they need," she says.
