WHITE PLAINS - A jury has ruled against the city of White Plains in a wrongful death suit filed by the family of a woman killed in a parking garage.

The family of Connie Russo-Carriero sued the city, claiming a lack of security contributed to her murder in 2005. The jury awarded the family nearly $2 million. Russo-Carriero's family says this was never about money, but rather was about safety. They hope the ruling will inspire changes to make garages in the city safer.

In June of 2005, Russo-Carriero was walking to her car in the garage adjacent to the Galleria Mall when she was fatally stabbed in the chest by Phillip Grant. The homeless sex offender allegedly waited several hours, undetected, looking to kill someone. The family claims surveillance cameras in the garage weren't working, though the city says there were marked and unmarked police officers in the garage that day.

Russo-Carriero's son Jonathan Russo says a portion of the $2 million will be donated to an organization that helps young children who have lost a parent.

The city of White Plains is appealing the verdict.
