Winter storm blankets Rockland and Orange counties
The winter storm hit the Hudson Valley Frida blanketed the region with as much as 10 inches of snow and ice and created a mess on the roads.
Driving conditions around Rockland County were made difficult by the continuing snowfall, though officials say the situation could have been a lot worse had more schools been in session. Many schools had the week off for February break, and many parents likely took off from work as well. Navigating around the secondary roads proved more dangerous for drivers, and speed was reduced on the Tappan Zee Bridge, which saw lighter-than-usual traffic.
The storm first hit the southern parts of the region harder than northern areas. Orange County only reported a few inches of snow in the morning, however, by the afternoon into evening that changed. Areas such as Warwick reported at least 7 inches of snow.
DPW crews worked overtime to clear the roads.
Roads froze over as the temperatures dropped Friday night. Messy weather will continue into Saturday.
