Wintry mix slows evening commute across LI
Wednesday's wintry mix of precipitation led to slick conditions during the evening commute across Long Island.
During the afternoon, police say an SUV overturned on the Northern State Parkway as the result of fast-changing weather conditions and wet roads.
Street signs warned drivers to reduce speeds during the wintry mix.
News 12 rode along with Nassau Highway Patrol Officer Thomas Greer, who says drivers should keep plenty of distance between them and the vehicle in front of them. He adds that people should constantly be reading the road.
"Reduce speed and always have an out," Greer says. "Try to always have an out, left or right."
No matter what type of car you drive -- whether it's a sports car, sedan or SUV -- Greer says it doesn't matter when the roads freeze over, especially on entrance and exit ramps.
Neither Suffolk nor Nassau counties reported a significant increase in accidents due to the weather.
