11h agoAs the music plays and the incense burns, the Yonkers African American Heritage Committee is ready for another big turnout today for the final day of Juneteenth weekend.
The day kicked off with a church worship service. That was followed by an African healing circle coming with libations, African drums and dancing.
There will also be several live performances taking place throughout the day, from music to comedy to spoken word poetry.
The Yonkers community has been celebrating Juneteenth for decades. Juneteenth is a day commemorating the official end of slavery in the United States. It’s the first time Juneteenth is a federal holiday, and it is more recognized by Americans than ever before.
The celebrations at Trevor Park will continue until 8 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
