Yonkers apartment building workers voted tonight to authorize a strike, if they don't get a new contract by the end of the month.

Lawyer Mathew Persanis, who represents the apartment buildings, says the major issue causing strife is that workers are being asked to contribute 10 percent of their health care coverage. A small request, he says, after agreeing to an increased pension program, an increased training program and a wage increase.

A union spokesman says workers aren't looking to get rich and that they're paid between $15 and $16 an hour, which, he says, barely makes ends meet in the Westchester area.

If a strike does take place, it would involve nearly 1,400 workers in 500 buildings.
