Yonkers City Council votes to extend red light camera program for another 5 years
The proposition for an extension gains momentum considering statistics from the New York City Department of Transportation, which revealed a significant 73% decline in the average daily number of red-light runners since the program's inception in 1994.

The measure was adopted in a 6-0 vote.
The city operates red light cameras at 25 intersections.
While some call it a cash grab, City Council President Lakisha Collins-Bellam said the program is critical to protect the city's streets.
The state Legislature still needs to approve the city's plan.
