Yonkers schools to face pre-k, busing cuts
School officials in Yonkers say they may be forced to cut pre-k, free school-busing and other programs as a result of the mayor's latest budget being rejected by the city council as well as a lack of state aid.
The city council rejected the latest budget plan unanimously over the weekend, partly because of the lack of school aid. The plan had also included hundreds of layoffs to police and firefighters.
Governor Paterson's veto of the state budget cuts $37 million in state aid to the district.
City officials say that if the state can guarantee the aid, then the budget cuts can be averted.
