MOUNT VERNON - The Mount Vernon Youth Bureau held its fourth "Ladies First" event at Nellie A. Thornton High School as part of its STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Math) Program.

About 50 students heard from women in those fields, with the goal of encouraging them to follow their lead.

Speakers told the students to ignore people who say they can't have careers in science and technology.

In addition to the speakers, the program featured a lunch, during which the young women had a chance to get some personal advice about their career choices
