Snow removal crews hit the roads on the East End Friday evening as a nor'easter bears down on Long Island.
Highway crews in the Town of Southold on the North Fork were preparing for a storm that could bring around 2 feet of snow to parts of Suffolk County.
Town Highway Superintendent Daniel Goodwin says there were 50 pieces of equipment ready to go with thousands of tons of salt and sand before the heaviest snowfall hits early Saturday.
Drivers are expected to work all day Saturday to keep up with the storm.
"Particular challenges out here on the East End are going to be the high winds," Goodwin says. "We have a lot of open fields and areas close to the Long Island Sound when we get a lot of blowing and drifting."
Residents in the area hit up stores to get ice melt and other items to prepare to stay at home.
"Aside from pushing my snowblower around the yard, just relaxing, read a good book, watch some movies," says Mattituck resident Steve Jester. "Hopefully we don't lose power."
Town officials say everyone should be staying off the street while plow crews are out.
"Stay off the roads," Goodwin says. "It's for our safety and your safety as well. It's not only going to help us do a better job, but it's also going to keep everybody safe."
Towns like Southold are waiting to lay down salt and sand once there's a small coating of snow on the road. They plan to start plowing a litter after that.
