Several hundred people hiked 1.5 miles Friday to raise money in memory of Andrew McMorris – a 12-year-old who was killed in Sept. 2018 when a drunken driver slammed into a group of Boy Scouts hiking in Suffolk County.
Donna Lillie, with the Boy Scout's Suffolk County Council, says the money raised is going toward a much-needed lodge at the Baiting Hollow Scout Camp.
"It's absolutely beautiful. It sleeps 40 people, it has separate areas for boys and girls. It has separate bedrooms for scout masters. It's fully handicapped accessible," says Lillie.
The lodge is being named after Andrew and includes some personal items of his cemented into the foundation of the building.
"I put a guitar pick because he played the guitar. I put his aviator sunglasses in there because he was taking flying lessons," says John McMorris, Andrew's father.
A paint brush and merit badge were also included.
Andrew's mom Alisa McMorris says seeing the lodge at first was emotional.
"You could feel his energy and his spirit here somehow and its hard to describe," she says.
The lodge replaced another that was damaged by a fallen tree.
The scouts have raised $112,000 of their goal of $130,000 so they can finish construction of the lodge and landscaping around it.
