LI veterans take part in 'Avenue of Flags' display in honor of Memorial Day weekend

Long Island scouts, veterans' groups and community organizations placed about 250,000 flags on headstones at Long Island National Cemetery on Saturday.
The event, known as the annual "Avenue of Flags" display honors those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
"We need to make sure people don't forget why we're free,” said Ken Barone of Farmingdale. “Sometimes it's very easy to just say, 'Hey I'm free.' But when you come out here and see these stones, you suddenly realize that here's somebody 18, 19, 20 years old who made the sacrifice for our freedom. And you understand it's a valuable thing."
The flags will remain on display until June 4.
