A New Rochelle man found guilty in the 2016 shooting death of an Iona College student has been sentenced to 25 years to life.

Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced today that Stivenson Desir was sentenced to 25 years to life for the murder of Brandon Lawrence and 15 years each for two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

Prosecutors say Desir shot the 19-year-old without provocation after a party and then drove to Lincoln Park in New Rochelle back in April 2016. Police say a fight broke out at the park but that Lawrence was not a part of it.

During the fist fight, Desir pulled a handgun and fired at the victim, hitting him once in the torso and resulting in his death. Lawrence was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Nothing can ever bring Brandon back, but I think justice was served. I think this young man had to be imprisoned, where he can sit and think about what he did,” said Brandon Lawrence’s mother, Sharon.

Sharon Lawrence said as a Christian she will try to forgive Desir for killing her son, but she'll never forget.
