Gov. Andrew Cuomo was in Peekskill Friday to throw his support behind Democrat Peter Harckham in the race for the 40th District seat in the state Senate.
The seat is currently occupied by Republican incumbent Terrence Murphy.
The showdown over the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh has become a rallying point in the race. Cuomo highlighted the battle in his remarks.
"Another reason to vote for Peter Harckham is because he's against confirmation of Kavanaugh and Terrence Murphy is," the governor said.
Harckham says he and Cuomo share the same values, including on issues facing women. With a prospect in view of securing a Democratic state Senate majority in November, the governor has vowed to codify Roe v. Wade into state law within the first 30 days.
In addition to Cuomo's support, Harckham also picked up another major endorsement Friday from Planned Parenthood.
Sen. Murphy has said he has a strong record of supporting issues that matter to women. The governor disputes that.
"Did you ask him if he supports Roe v. Wade? That's the only question," Cuomo says.
Asked for comment, a Murphy campaign spokesperson didn't mention the governor's endorsement of Harckham, but instead referenced allegations that Harckham had "double dipped" from two high-paying state positions simultaneously.
