A man is in police custody after allegedly shooting an officer inside the 41st Precinct on Sunday.
The attack took place just hours after another officer was shot in a patrol van just a block away, near Baretto and East 163rd streets in Longwood.
Police says 45-year-old Robert Williams, of the Bronx, walked into the precinct around 8 a.m. Sunday and fired shots. A bullet struck a lieutenant in the left arm. News 12 was told that the lieutenant returned fire, but Williams was not struck.
"I will point out that this coward immediately laid down but only after he ran out of bullets," said NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea.
Police are confident Williams is the man who also opened fire on the two officers Saturday night.
Williams is charged in both incidents with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest.
Police call him a career criminal. They say Williams was paroled in 2017 for an incident in 2002 where he was convicted of attempted murder.
Commissioner Shea says Williams shot someone. then carjacked a woman, crashed her car and then got into a gunfight with police.
Police add they are speaking with a woman who was in the area Sunday morning.
Both the lieutenant and the officer are expected to make a full recovery.
