Mount Vernon police rescued six dogs they say were abused and neglected from the home of an ex-convict Friday.
According to police, five pit bulls and a Rottweiler were abused, covered in feces and left on short chains without food and water. Police say the dogs were mistreated by 19-year-old Gladstone Dankin, as part of a pit bull breeding operation he was running out of his house. The animals were discovered after an anonymous tip and police say this will likely be the first of many arrests as they crack down on dog fighting.
The discovery of a pit bull named Floyd has made animal cruelty has been a top priority for Mount Vernon police. Floyd was found paralyzed and ravaged from dog bites last week and police believe he was used as bait to train more aggressive dogs. Then a few days later, 63 kittens were dumped at the Mount Vernon Animal Shelter. Police believe the felines were to used as pit bull bait as well.
Dankin is facing four charges of misdemeanor animal abuse. He also has two prior felony convictions and is on bail for another felony charge.
The dogs are being treated for various injuries and diseases, but are expected to make a full recovery.
The city is offering a $500 reward for information on dog fighting. There is also a $6,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in the case of Floyd.
