Stewart International Airport took a major step in its growth Thursday as the first AirTran Airways flight touched down, putting the airport firmly on track to becoming a major tri-state hub.Flight number 595 from Atlanta touched down with New York Mets pitcher Tom Glavine aboard. Glavine says the public is going to like the product. AirTran will send two flights a day to Atlanta, a hub that connects to an additional 52 airports. The airline will also have daily nonstop flights to Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. The president of AirTran says the airline?s current schedule will be the same throughout the year.AirTran Airways Director John Kirby boasted of other features the public will approve of, like the airline?s number one rank for lowest percentage of lost luggage. AirTran is the second major discount airline to make its home at Stewart after JetBlue set up camp this month. Local residents say they are thrilled that they will not have to drive to JFK or Newark to fly.
